Vincent Van Gogh

Mr. Kennedy’s class have been working with Ms McGovern to create  artworks based on the painting “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh.

Vincent Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands in 1853. His father and grandfather were ministers but others in his family worked in the art world. He had two brothers and three sisters. Although he enjoyed drawing from a young age Vincent had a number of other jobs before becoming a full time artist. He worked as a teacher in London and as a minister.

In 1889 Vincent became very ill and had to go into a mental hospital. He did lots of painting while in hospital. He painted one of his most famous paintings “Starry Night” while in hospital.

Throughout his life Vincent painted over 2000 paintings and drawings in 10 years but he only ever sold one.

Vincent Van Gogh cut off his own ear after an argument with the famous artist Paul Gaugin. He wrapped up his ear and sent it to a lady as a present!

“Starry Night” can be seen in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Vincent Van Gogh died in July 1890.
